The second skill that helps build a strong company culture is being vulnerable. Some people think that trust is a prerequisite for vulnerability, but in fact the opposite is true. This can be done by admitting to feeling nervous or afraid, perhaps from the leader of the organization.

In a culture that values trust, it’s important to be honest with one another and give feedback. This allows people to learn from past experiences and grow as individuals.

The third condition for good teamwork is having a sense of purpose. Zappos, the online shoe retailer, promotes radical transparency in order to make employees feel safe. The company grew quickly, which led to some issues that needed addressing. Management addressed these concerns by creating an anonymous forum where employees could ask questions about what was on their minds, as well as answering them via a monthly newsletter called “Ask Anything”.
