“Aligned” Leadership

Leaders should live by a set of values and make sure that their employees do the same. They should also be held responsible for living up to those values and teaching them to others so that they can build on them as a foundation for an ethical culture in the workplace.

Joe Paterno was the winningest football coach in NCAA history, but he ignored that one of his assistant coaches molested young boys. The scandal humiliated him and eventually led to his death. A lawyer named John Edwards seemed like a good presidential candidate until it became known that he had an affair with another woman while married to someone else.

If you want to be a good leader, your behavior should align with your values. One of the most important values is trust. If you value trust, you have to exhibit it yourself and not violate it by being untrustworthy. For example, if you say that kindness is one of your values, then any kind of rude behavior contradicts that value. You can’t be unkind and claim to value kindness at the same time. Another important principle is integrity—you shouldn’t compromise what’s right just because someone tells you to do so or because it will make things easier for other people in some way.

In the last few years, domestic violence issues involving high-profile athletes such as Ray Rice have plagued the National Football League. The fans and sponsors are to blame for continuing to support players despite their misdeeds. Fans’ loyalty to their teams overshadows the lack of integrity among those players.

Organizational values are important to the success of a company. A leader should have his or her employees on the same page by shaping their culture in such a way that everyone is aligned. For example, job descriptions should accurately reflect what an employee does and includes all tasks they’re supposed to perform. The company’s promotional material should represent the true essence of it as well. Employees also need to be professional and use appropriate language at work.

Leaders need to have their own values and be transparent about them. If a leader’s personal values don’t align with the company’s, they’re going to get into trouble. A leader has to know what their values are before announcing them, because if they announce something that doesn’t match up with who they really are, it will backfire on them.

“Aware” Leadership

If you are a manager and your employees argue with you, or if the turnover rate is unusually high in your department, then it’s time to change how you lead. If you can see that there’s something wrong with the way that you’re leading and take responsibility for it instead of blaming others, then that shows some awareness on your part. In order to be an effective leader, though, we have to make tough decisions about what our values are and live up to them in all areas of our lives.

The importance of self-awareness is to understand yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, as well as what you like and dislike. It’s also important to be aware of others by observing their verbal habits, facial expressions and mannerisms. Finally, it’s important to have a sense of cultural awareness in order for people to work together effectively.

Many people are afraid to take a stand on something. For instance, if you say that patience is one of your values, it means you have to be more understanding and less judgmental. If fearlessness is one of your values, dealing with challenging situations may be easier for you. Before making any public statement about your life’s principles or beliefs, think through them first and see how they can affect the way you live every day. Once you commit yourself to upholding a value, it will make things harder for you but also easier in some ways because once committed to it there’s no turning back from that value as it becomes part of who you are as well as defines what kind of person others see when they look at YOU!
